In the words of the Beatles, we get by with a little help from our friends. When it comes to keeping the kitchen squeaky clean, we’ve got an arsenal of sustainable, eco-friendly cleaning products and accessories. Here are three of favorites.
Amala Magic Sponge Cloth
Americans use a whopping 13 billion pounds of paper towels every year. That’s about 51,000 trees every day. That’s a LOT. OF. TREES. If you feel a pang of guilt each time you tear away a paper towel from the roll, then let us tell you all about Amala.
Amala cloths are made of 100% renewable resources and are fully biodegradable. A single cloth replaces up to 15 rolls of paper towels, reducing material waste in our landfills. They can be used on all types of surfaces to remove dirt and dust, and won’t leave scratches or streaks. One cloth absorbs 20 times its own weight in water, and quickly releases liquids by simply wringing it out. It’s super durable, and is tear and abrasion-resistant. It can be washed up to 300 times with a soft detergent. To kill bacteria, the damp sponge cloth can be microwaved daily for 1-2 minutes to keep it sterilized. You can also toss it into the dishwasher (top rack) or washing machine (lay flat to dry). It’s truly magic.
BioBag Kitchen Compost Waste Bags
We’ve talked about the benefits of composting kitchen scraps on our blog before. Not only does it keep organic waste out of landfills, but composted material adds valuable nutrients back into the soil.
Over here at Aunt Fannie’s HQ, we’re particularly fond of the 3-gallon bags for our countertop compost pail. Unlike regular plastic bags, BioBags are made from a resin derived from plants, vegetable oils and compostable polymers and can be consumed by micro-organisms that live in our soils. Because of this, BioBags can be readily composted along with organic waste at municipal composting facilities.
Thanks to their unique ability to “breathe” without leaking, the bags are also great for refrigerated food storage. Store your fresh produce in BioBags before using them a second time as your compost pail lining. BioBags can also help reduce odor and bacterial build-up during food scrap collection by allowing heat and moisture to escape.
Dr. Bronner’s Citrus Orange Liquid Soap
Dr. Bronner’s is formulated with Fair Trade, organic ingredients (like coconut oil, olive oil and hemp oil) that are safe for our body, home and planet. You won’t find any sulfates or parabens here. For those of you without a dishwasher, this soap is perfect for hand washing dishes. Bonus: it also doubles as a pretty fantastic hand soap.
The Citrus aroma is a fresh and invigorating blend of organic orange, lemon and lime oils. And all of Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soaps are concentrated, biodegradable, and effective. We also love that it’s packaged in a 100% post-consumer recycled bottle. Green goodness from start to finish.
